"The best [sound] design for this show in the years I've directed it!"
In my first leadership role within my program at UC's College-Conservatory of Music, I was appointed to be the Head of Sound for our annual Student Choreographers' Showcase. I was no stranger to the production as I had served as the A1 on the previous year's production of SCS. With the show, I wanted the audience to feel the full dynamic and frequency ranges of the beautiful music selected by the choreographers. I built a full playback system and PA to support this vision with use of subwoofers to emphasize the low end of the cello in the orchestral pieces as well as the rock and energy of the 80's rock hits.
I served the production as the Head of Sound. A role given to people in charge of non-Mainstage productions at CCM. The scope of work includes responsibilities typically covered by the Sound Designer, Assistant Sound Designer, and the Production Sound Engineer (PSE.)

Sound Design Package
by Amy Herzog. A conceptual design for the University of Cincinnati's Sound Workroom Practicum II. Fall 2024.
The final project for the introductory course in sound design called for a conceptual design of a play specified by the instructor. Amy Herzog's The Great God Pan follows Jamie as an old friend from his elementary school days, Frank, re-enters his life while pursuing legal action against his father for sexual abuse. Frank wonders if Jamie had ever been a victim of his father. This send Jamie into a tailspin as he questions his life from childhood to present.
The script calls for abstract designs, so I wanted to match an abstract scenic design with ambient noise to ground the audience in the locations while filling out the spaces the characters occupy. In establishing a strong sense of location, the audience should have an easier time understanding the story.
by Christopher Chen. A conceptual design for the University of Cincinnati's Theatrical Design & Appreciation
This project gave a team of lighting, costume, and scenic designers and me a challenge to design a full conceptual production in our respective fields based on a play chosen by the instructor. Headlands follows a man, Henry, as he uncovers the circumstances surrounding his father's death. Our team focused heavily on Henry's point of view as a "wannabe detective" and him being an unreliable narrator. We framed the show as a classic noir detective story.
